What do I do?
Each appointment is guided by you: the parent, the mother, the lactating caregiver. Although there are many common challenges parents and babies face, every family experiences these in their own way.
To begin with, I will listen. Sometimes sharing your story can take longer than expected, and that’s ok. I will make notes to be sure I have all the relevant information, and ask clarifying questions to be confident that we’re all on the same page.
In addition to taking a detailed history of the parent(s), and infant(s) as appropriate, an appointment may also include:
Discussing current challenges, concerns, expectations, and goals.
Observing a feed from start to finish.
Reviewing positioning, attachment, techniques and aids used.
Guiding adjustments using hands-off and body mirroring techniques.
Performing infant oral anatomy and physiology examination, and screening for restriction or tongue-tie if clinically indicated.
Performing examination of lactating breasts if clinically indicated.
Providing information and education about the expected biological and physiological course of lactation and breastfeeding, discussion of what variations may have been identified,
guidance and support with strategies to address variations that may be causing challenges.Flange fitting to optimise and support pumping and expressing if required.
Creating an individualised feeding plan if required.
Planning follow-up or on-going support if required.
Signposting and/or referring to other services if required.
If you would like to discuss your needs before booking an appointment, please be in touch.
